COCO MARTIN
BIO
Coco Martin is a self-taught photographer, architect, poet and writer born and raised in Peru. He lives between Lima and New York and exhibits regularly since 1991. His art work has been featured at the Museo Arte Contemporáneo in the context of the 2014 Photo Biennial in Lima, Perú. Martin’s work was also shown at the First Biennial of Photography of Puerto Rico (1998), Second Biennial of Lima, Peru (2000) and at the Biennial of Photography of Quito, Ecuador (2001) and at the Organization of American States Museum in Washington, D.C. (2008). His artwork is part of the permanent collection at FoLA Fototeca Latinoamericana Museum, in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and at the Museo de Arte de San Marcos in Lima (Peru). He has been recognized with the Exhibit Grant Award from the Council on the Arts for Staten Island, New York, and consequently selected for a solo show at Horrman Library at Wagner College, and for the 2005 Annual Juried Exhibition at Staten Island Museum.
Opus Incarnate, his most ambitious series to date, was shown in La Galeria and Lima Photo Art Fair in August 2012, where he introduced scannographies as part of his photographic research and creative practice and getting wide press coverage. One scannography was finalist in the 2014 LensCulture Portrait Awards in June 2014 and other was selected TOP TEN winner in the Latin American Fotografía 3 for the AI-AP 2014 travel exhibition and catalog. Recent reviews includes: aCurator by Julie Grahame and Dispatches from Latin America by David Schonauer. This body of work was selected a weekend portfolio by Elodie Mailliet for the disappeared french blog Le Journal de la Photographie in April 2013 and by Christy Karpinski for True/False exhibition for F-Stop Magazine in June 2013. It was selected to participate at the International Summer School of Photography (ISSP) in Latvia also in 2013.
His work has been recently featured in PAPER - Volume 02 Spring 2021, curated and printed feature by Valentine Editions and the interviews in former ADORE NOIR MAGAZINE (Vol. 32) and in Creative Monday blog, also in SHOTS Magazine, HOME issue 141 - fall 2018; Die Angst - 1st edition of a Berlin based Photo Magazine (October 2015); aCurator blog - by Julie Grahame. featured artist - Feb 2015; ALBÜM magazine from GALERIA MÜ, Colombia (Print issue, November 2014); in L'Oeil de la Photographie (online, August 2014); ARTE AL LIMITE, Chile (print issues, 2009 and 2012); GUP and Fotografi (Norway) both online in 2013. Back in August 2010 his solo show entitled New Neighbors was held in La Galería (Lima, Peru) and became a traveling exhibition at the Peruvian American Cultural Institute - Arequipa (Nov. 2010) and Peruvian Embassy in Washington, D.C (Sep. 2011). This body of work was also selected to participate in Peruvian Art Now, a group exhibition at the Isabel Aninat Gallery in Santiago de Chile and runner-up for the Forward Thinking Museum, 4th Quarter Photography Contest in 2010.
